OVERCOMING MY FEAR OF PUBLIC SPEAKING

Sweaty palms, heart racing, butterflies in my stomach, shallow breathing and rising body temperature as anxiety creeps in at the thought of standing in front a crowd to give a presentation.

Did you know public speaking is listed as America's #1 fear?

Some fear public speaking more than they fear death!!

 

Anyone who says they don’t get nervous before or during a speech has got to be superhuman!

But once I understood that it was normal to feel this way, instead of avoiding an opportunity to address an audience, I decided to feel the fear and do it anyway!

“Unknown situations empower me to grow.”

It's within this process that I've learned a few things that have helped me overcome or at least minimize fear of public speaking.

Here's a few..

I AM PASSIONATE ABOUT MY TOPICS

I know my topics and I know them well!

Ever heard about the 5 P's?

Proper preparation prevents poor performance.

The more I understand my topic, the more passionate I am about sharing my content. But that doesn't come by just reading or by watching videos. It comes by being a practitioner of the topics that I pick. It comes by being in the trenches and actually doing the thing.

Being a Social Media practitioner prepares me to be able to answer questions and further serve my audience.

The more knowledgable I become, the more secure I feel delivering my presentation! It gives me some wiggle room for improv and storytelling.

GOT STORIES? DO TELL!

Never rely just on kick-ass content. You need to connect with your audience at a personal level and what better way to do so than by storytelling.

Proper storytelling will give you an opportunity to build rapport with your crowds. Feel free to be vulnerable. Don't bore them with a lecture, instead try to lead with a question or story, a defining moment that helped shape your life perhaps.

Storytelling helps to get the audience thinking about ideas or focusing on the narrative of your story, instead of on you.

KEEP IT PRACTICAL

You might be the Grand Master Geek at some specific topics but your audience might not.

Don't get too techy!

Practice your entire presentation in front of some people who might fit your audience's profile.

You must know who exactly you are talking to.

Get feedback and video yourself so you can see what changes and improvements need to be made.

You want to be authentic, natural and connect with your audience by “dumbing it down” a bit if necessary. Provide practical examples, demonstrations, case studies.

Not just a boring Powerpoint sounding like a robot.

MAKE IT INTERACTIVE

Ask questions!

Check for your audience's pulse once in a while, yes?

One of the tools I like to use is  Mentimeter .

This tool allows me to ask if anyone has questions and my audience is able to engage via this app in an incognito manner, that way no one feels like they're on the spot or asking a stupid question while I am able to take the attention off myself.

VIBRATE

Focus on slow, deep breaths right before your speech to ease any anxiety but remember to vibrate. Project your voice and resonate inside that room.

Remember to breathe during your talk and change tonality, from animated to slower almost whispering tones when you want to reel people back into your story.

The more nervous you are, the faster you'll tend to speak. But that's ok. Slow it down, relax and just breathe.

Be present, be generous with the information and value you are giving your audience, and be excited about this opportunity you have to share your expertise with a crowd of people who are interested in your speech.

Now get out there and start booking those public speaking engagements!

 

Don't be selfish and let fear get in the way of sharing your story, knowledge or wisdom. Someone out there needs to hear what you have to say!

REPROGRAM YOUR MIND

New Year. New You. Blah blah blah. I’ve heard that before. I've even said that before. Well, guess what? It ain’t gonna work if you’re not building that mindset muscle! Trust me. I know.

The good news is you don’t have to live in the memories and failures of your past. Reprogram your mind and your brain can now be a map of your successful future.

Mindset is defined as a mental attitude or inclination; a fixed state of mind.

It’s easy to say you want change in your life, but what actions are you planning to take to make that happen? It’s time to dig deep, get rid of all those limiting beliefs and whatever is stopping you from experiencing your true potential and achieving success in your life.

It’s time to reprogram that mind of yours because growth inside will fuel growth outside, so let’s get to work!

PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY

Want to change? Take ownership of your internal feelings & attitudes and what you project to the outside world. The good news is you’re in charge of your life. The bad news is you’re in charge of your life.

Why not choose happiness and positivity every time? Choose to commit to your personal growth. Choose to be the best version of yourself, for you and for those around you. Aren’t you worth it?

SELF-AWARENESS

Be aware of negative thinking, self-talk, energy and emotions. Think positive! Be confident and believe in yourself.

If it wasn’t for this, my ass would still be on the couch for hours after work, wasting time and scrolling aimlessly through Facebook. I was lazy! I gained weight, started to feel bad about myself and didn't like what I saw in the mirror. 

Somewhere along the way, I lost my self confidence.

Once I became aware of my negative talk and emotions, I finally decided enough was enough and took action to ensure I wouldn't feel that way anymore. I am more active and committed to my fitness than ever before.

I’m a member at Orange Theory Fitness and loving it! And when I turned 35, I challenged myself to run 35 races by my next birthday. I am really enjoying my journey, getting stronger & faster and I’m happy with my progress!

Self-awareness is the first step towards change. And change is good.

BUILD THAT MUSCLE CONSISTENTLY

Develop habits that make your success inevitable. They say where your focus goes, your energy flows. Be clear on your vision.

Take action daily by writing, reading or reciting your vision, reading inspirational books, listening to motivational audios, watching videos, reciting positive affirmations, meditating, and attending empowering events.

Invest in your personal development. Apply and teach what you learn and you will soon go from thinking to doing to being.

I get it, you’re busy. But guess what?

There’s no reason you can’t dedicate a few minutes in a 24-hour day to plug into an inspirational call, or watch a kick ass FB video online, or listen to a CD on your drive to work.

Be honest with yourself the way I had to be. If you truly desire success in your life, you’ll find the time. Besides, what better way to jump start your day than by reading a good motivational quote?!

SURROUND YOURSELF WITH WINNERS

Get around positive people, successful leaders, innovators, thinkers, do-gooders, those that have already achieved what you want, and those that believe in your vision and dreams.

Since I recently started running, I joined several local online running groups. It feels good to be part of a community of active people that support, motivate and celebrate each other's success!

ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE

Be grateful for the journey. Appreciate all that you have, all that you are, and all that you have accomplished thus far. 

Over the Thanksgiving holiday, I woke up early to run a 5K race in the cold, rainy weather. Instead of complaining, I filled my mind with thoughts of all I was grateful for in my life.

Am I at my goal weight? No. Have I achieved all my goals I hoped for this past year? Nah. Are my husband and I where we want to be financially? Nope.

But we still have so much to be thankful for and recognize all our blessings! Oh and that race turned out to be one of my best and most enjoyable races to date.

BE A SERVANT LEADER

Serve, help and build others up. Get involved in your community.

I have never left a volunteer opportunity feeling bad or like I have wasted my time.

I can't think of a better way to feel a sense of fulfillment in life than by giving back and helping others.

I really hope this helps you on your journey to become a happier, healthier, even more successful and better YOU!

5 TIPS TO CRUSH YOUR GOALS

2018 is creeping up on us. Where does the time go?! Hopefully you’ve had major success with those goals you wrote down at the start of 2017. If not, don’t beat yourself up. You can still get back on track. Did you make some progress, at least? If so, awesome! Hope you celebrated your successes along the way. It’s important to acknowledge all your accomplishments no matter how small. If you slacked off and aren’t happy with how 2017 turned out, I’m here to give you some tips so you can hit the ground running for an even better and successful new year!

1. Write down your goals. 

Think. Get crystal clear on what your goals are and why you want to achieve them. Envision yourself achieving each goal and feel those positive emotions as if you already achieved them. Keep  them visible and read it daily.

2. Include your action plan and deadline for each goal.

Take massive action. What are the steps you have to take to reach your goals? When do you want to accomplish it by? Be careful not to get stuck and stay in the planning & prepping process that you don’t actually take action towards reaching your goal. You’re going to have to get uncomfortable at some point. Remember you don’t have to learn or know everything ahead of time. If you’re waiting for the perfect time, it’s now. Just get started!

3. Focus.

Focus on the correct activities and commit to doing them daily in order to reach your goal. Don’t get distracted. It’s OK to say no to people and things that don’t help you grow or progress towards your goal. Know your priorities and non-negotiables. People make to-do lists, why not make a NOT-TO-DO list and stick to it?

4. Believe in yourself.                

C’mon have some faith in YOU! Like the Maju Mindset book says, “Your mindset is the doorway to your greatness”. Know that you are worthy of success and achieving your goals. Watch how you talk to yourself. Avoid words like “I can’t”, “I don’t have”, I will never”, etc. Plugging in to some positive & motivational audios or videos can do wonders for your personal development and growth. Try it out! I strongly believe that once you realize you are worthy and deserving of success and happiness, that’s when you’ll see a shift in your energy and demand more of yourself.

5. Find an accountability partner.

Grab a friend or coach. Share your goals with them to keep yourself accountable. Check in frequently to ensure you’re staying on top of the actions necessary to obtain your goals. Once you publicly put it out there, how can you not follow through? Surround yourself with people that will inspire you and challenge you to be better, people that you can learn from, people that believe in you, your dreams and vision.

In case you were wondering how I did with my 2017 goals, I’m an amazing starter and a less than amazing finisher. Raise your hand if you know what I’m talking about! To be honest, I did OK in the beginning of the year but quickly faded and had to re-evaluate my goals in May. Because of, let’s say personal life happenings, I allowed myself to get distracted and I lost focus. When I rewrote my goals, they all focused on rebuilding ME – my health, fitness, happiness, self-esteem, confidence, mental wellbeing, and my spiritual and personal relationships. Once I realized that I needed to take care of myself first, I went to work and let me tell you, I feel great! I am a work in progress but not only do I feel a difference, I have had friends and family tell me they see a positive change in me, too. How awesome is that?! Since then, I have given myself more goals to work towards before the end of this year. I share this with you because it is the reason one of the tips above is mindset and believing in yourself. We all get thrown curve balls from time to time but if we are equipping our mind with positivity, motivation and encouragement, it may give us the mental strength we need to handle it better and continue to stay focused on our path to crushing goals.

REIGNITE

I recently gave tough love and in return received tough love from someone close to me. As hard as it was to hear, I had to come to terms that some of what was spoken to me was true. Without getting into specifics of the harsh reality, I write this with the intention of helping myself and hopefully you too.

Today I found myself listening to several motivational podcasts and watching countless videos of Gary Vaynerchuk. I needed it. I was re-reminded that self-awareness is the first step towards change and how important it is to take action NOW in order to take control of my life and be better. I truly believe that we all can be better, and sometimes we need that push to be reminded that complacency and just settling does no one any good.

no-excuses“I'm tired. I'm lazy. I have no time. I'll do it tomorrow. I'm not good enough. I have a slow metabolism. I'm stressed. I'm scared. I can't afford it. What will other people think of me?” are just some of the things that we may tell ourselves daily that ultimately do us more harm than good. Then we find that another day, week, month, and year goes by……and we're stuck in the same place we were before – feeling unfulfilled, undeserving, unworthy, unhealthy, etc. Am I the only one that experiences this? At what point do you say, “enough is enough”?!

Well, let me tell you…..

no-more-excuses-1As [another] year approaches, I gathered several notebooks where I had written goals from 2014, 2015, and I'm ashamed to say that I couldn't even find my goals from 2016. As I re-read my goals from the past years, I was disappointed and in disbelief. Ask me how many of those goals were exactly the same each year? And how many did I actually accomplish? HA! That, along with the recent tough love I was given was enough for me to finally realize that I needed some serious self reflection.

I decided that I needed to REIGNITE the fire under my ass. There is no one in this world that can make you attain your goals or live a better life, but yourself. You cannot and should not rely on someone else to make you happy. I read an article a while back posted by Like a Boss Girls and one line stood out. “You can't light up the world if you're not tending to your own flame.” WOW. It starts with YOU and making a decision to commit to doing the things that will get you closer to what your heart, mind and body desires – whether it be health, business, relationship, family or career related.

REIGNITE that fire inside of you. Find that passion, motivation and drive to live the happy, purpose-filled life that you are worthy of and deserve. Gary V. says that the biggest poison in us is regret, and that there is zero value in complaining. Don't look back next year, feeling bad about yourself, wishing that you would have started and done something different.

2016 Network Marketing Resolution

january1So it’s January 1st and most of us are stoked about the opportunity of starting a new year fresh, making all sorts of commitments in order to attain a better life.

Achieving a healthier version of ourselves, saving money, paying out debt and discontinuing old habits are probably within the most popular resolutions people make when we cross this imaginary line in time.

I have come to understand that goal setting has very little to do with eating 12 grapes at midnight and making a wish. Looking back at my list of goals I had written at the beginning of 2015, I realize today how crucial it has been for me to adopt this habit for the past few years. Although there are many of my goals still on that list,  some other goals I did reach. I even exceeded my own goals on other personal targets I had set for myself.

In network marketing, no matter what your business looks like today, there is always room for improvement. There are always new heights and ranks to reach by helping new people. Whether you just enrolled today or have been in the industry for a while, if you don’t set yourself some targets, you will be spinning your wheels just making a lot of noise but going nowhere fast.

I know this because I have been there! Expecting to hit it big with a minimum wage mentality. Complaining about the results I didn’t get for the work I didn’t do.

Insane right?

This is why I have taken the opportunity to write my first official blog post and share a few tips on how you can also take your network marketing business to new heights starting today.

Mindset

First thing’s first. You have to decide you’re not gonna sit there in the same place and now is the time to make your power move. Some people quit before actually starting anything. Some others quit at the first sign of adversity. Others quit right before their breakthrough within five feet from gold. What was the common denominator? Their weak mindset.

So if you’re serious about giving yourself and your family a shot at living a more meaningful life through network marketing, then your mindset needs to be bulletproof.  I am talking about the daily routines that nurture our minds into the correct frame in order to follow through with the disciplines and habits required for success even when the going gets tough.

Reading books and listening to empowering audios is what works best for me when I wanna install new software in my brain. I’m constantly listening to Grant Cardone and John Maxwell among other authors who I admire. Jenny is currently reading Dani Johnson's First Steps To Wealth, a woman who went from homeless to riches. Mindset is paramount.

Be sure you and your team leaders are reading something empowering if you don’t want the Facebook to eat away their time and corrupt their mindset.

 

Momentum

Amateurs start a business. Network marketing professionals launch their business. More than once and every so often.

No, I am not referring to those career jumpers. Not those who are here one day and tomorrow they are in another deal. I am talking about the network marketing professional who has some skin in the game, who has some staying power and understands that this is built from event to event, with 90 day sprints with all you've got in order to create all the momentum that is needed for the sustainable growth of any network marketing business. 

Momentum is only reached with massive amounts of action. Intentionality combined with the proper amount of action during a period of time, in conjunction with your team playing on the same page, equals results. Don’t wait to be perfect

Please don’t be like me and wait until the all the stars align, the moon turns blue and the fat lady sings before deciding to go pro. Here’s a secret: We all are still figuring things out. It doesn’t matter what you have accomplished in life or haven’t yet accomplished. There is someone out there who you might consider less qualified than you, who is winning big in network marketing.

The biggest names in the game are out there everyday trying and failing, adjusting and swinging the bat again. Some strike out, some hit foul balls, some home runs, but they don’t stop swinging after the first strikeout. You don’t have to bat 1,000 average, you just need to keep swinging the bat, keep throwing the punch, keep planting the seed, keep sharing your story.

Today on January 1st, 2016 thousands of people with dreams and goals just like you and I are taking part in a movement.  Network Marketing is the only industry that will allow you to rewrite the outcome of your life if you choose to.
